The mission of West County READS is to promote, support, and encourage efforts to increase children literacy and family literacy in West Contra Costa County. One way this is achieved is by providing free books to the community through events and programs. WCR encourages all children read or be read to 20 minutes each day!
West County READS is an all-volunteer organization that promotes family literacy through events, activities and book giveaways. We want kids to learn to love reading as early in life as possible. While we focus specifically on children from birth to third grade (8 years), many of our outreach activities include parents and older youth.
Currently, fewer than 30 percent of West Contra Costa third graders can read at grade level. In some very low-income neighborhoods, fewer than 10 percent are fully literate. Local schools have embarked on a series of reforms to address these needs in the classroom, but the successful education of our children depends on the help of the entire community .
