John M. Gioia - District 1 Supervisor
I’ve been delighted to work with and support West County Reads since its inception, 15 years ago. This dedicated group of volunteers is committed to increasing literacy in West Contra Costa, largely by making high quality children’s books accessible to all children, from all backgrounds. West County Reads also hosts fun and creative book readings and story-times, collaborating with a variety of community partners on the important goal of teaching and supporting reading.
Alicia Gallo - Richmond MainStreet
Our partnership with West County READS is crucial to providing a wide range of kid-friendly activities at our community events. Thanks to West County READS we are able to incorporate free book giveaways at our Healthy Village Festival, Music on the Main concerts, and Downtown Holiday Festival. The kids LOVE choosing their own books and our volunteers love passing them out.
Eric Acosta-Verprauskus, Principal - Verde Elementary School
I’m writing on behalf of Verde Elementary School in North Richmond section of Contra Costa County. West County Reads has played an instrumental role in supporting our school’s literacy turn around. A part of our approach to erase this gap is to get our students to read as many books as possible at school and at home at an appropriate level. Further, we want to make books a constant presence at school celebrations. West County Reads has provided us with thousands of books so we can reach that goal. We are now able to provide a leveled library to every classroom with books at the appropriate skill level. We are able to have family events throughout the year in which we give out hundreds of books. Our students were able to read millions of words last year and that is in large part thanks to West County Reads. Our parent room is now stocked with hundreds of books which are available for them to take home at any time. We are grateful for West County Reads. They have given us a treasured resource.
